Medals First, Trophies as Supplement

Under standard USA Fencing event practice, gold-silver-bronze medals are the expected recognition for individual podium places. Trophies are added for team results, high-point awards, veteran or collegiate highlights, and challenge cups that remain with the event. Dual third places occur frequently after pools and direct elimination; experienced organizers therefore order at least one extra bronze medal (and matching trophy if used) at the outset.

Budget and Production Windows from the 28 Orders

Total spend on medals + trophies + engraving + shipping most often fell between 4 % and 6 % of the event's entry-fee revenue. Absolute ranges were:

  • Under 80 fencers: $350–700
  • 80–250 fencers: $900–1,800

These are observed outcomes from the sample, not targets. Medal-only events sat at the low end; trophy-heavy tables sat higher.

Standard production time after final engraved text was approved averaged three weeks. Clients who placed orders four weeks before the event had comfortable margin. Any order requiring completion in under ten business days incurred a rush charge of 20–35 %.

Resin was the volume choice for category awards. Champion and team pieces more often used metal or resin-on-wood for better photographs and durability. Current examples are listed on our fencing trophies for tournaments page.

Design Details Specific to Fencing

Effective figures usually include a clear weapon silhouette, a fencer in guard or lunge, and a mask shape. For foil and sabre awards a subtle lamé reference is appropriate; épée designs normally omit it because the entire body is the valid target. Clean modern lines photograph more reliably under gym lighting than ornate traditional styles. When quantity reaches the mid-teens, a custom fencing trophy with an integrated event logo is often only modestly more expensive than a decorated stock piece.

Engraving Order That Fits Standard Plates

  • Event name
  • Year
  • Weapon / category / age group
  • Place or award title
  • Athlete or team name

Four to six lines remain legible on most plates. Exact spellings locked early prevent the majority of reprint delays.

Case Study: A 140-Fencer Regional Open That Hit Two Snags

Entry-fee revenue: $24,000.
Final awards invoice: $1,248 (5.2 %).

Breakdown of the $1,248:

Medals for all individual 1st–3rd (including two extra bronze sets): $410

Five 12-inch resin team trophies + one crystal MVP plaque: $520

Engraving: $145

Shipping: $88

Rush engraving fee: $85 (we waived $40 as a one-time accommodation after the client's name list arrived four days before the ship date)

Two problems occurred. First, the original order contained only one bronze set per category; three categories produced dual thirds, requiring the extra sets. Second, final team-name spellings arrived late and triggered the rush fee. Both issues were resolved before the event, but the organizers now lock name lists ten days before the production cutoff and order the extra third-place set on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When do I still need a fencing trophy if I am already ordering medals?

A: For team titles, overall awards, special recognition, or a photo piece beside gold. Many clean tables use medals for every individual 1st–3rd and trophies for everything else.

Q: How many extra third-place awards are realistic?

A: One extra set of bronzes (and matching trophies if used) covered the dual-third situations in the majority of our 2024–2025 sample.

Q: What calendar window should I use?

A: Three weeks production after final text + transit time. Four weeks total is the window we recommend.

Q: Can one figure cover foil, épée and sabre?

A: Yes. Most events use a single design and differentiate by the engraved weapon line.

Q: How should perpetual or challenge trophies be specified?

A: Larger cups with a sturdy base and replaceable plates so a new winner can be added each year.
