Classic Bowling Award Categories

These eight categories form the foundation of most end-of-season programs.

League or Tournament Champion
First-place individual or team. Most leagues require bowlers to have completed a substantial portion of the schedule (commonly two-thirds of the games) to qualify for season-long awards.

High Game (Scratch and/or Handicap)
Highest single-game score. Many mixed-average leagues offer both versions so more bowlers stay competitive.

High Series / High Set
Highest three-game total. Under standard USBC series guidelines, the three games must be consecutive and bowled on the same date. Games split across different dates generally do not qualify as a single series for honor-score purposes. See the current Playing Rules for full series qualifications.

Perfect Game (300)
The highest individual honor. Proper foul procedures are required for the score to be eligible for official high-score recognition. Centers that do not provide for foul calling (functioning lights or designated callers) risk having the score disqualified from national awards. Details appear in the USBC Playing Rules section on fouls.

Most Improved Bowler
Calculated by comparing the final average to a prior baseline (previous season's book average of sufficient games, or the early portion of the current season for new members). Most leagues require a minimum number of games-often two-thirds of the schedule. Leagues may set their own exact formula.

Highest Average
Season-long consistency. Eligibility almost always includes a minimum games requirement. Average equals total pins divided by total games, fraction dropped.

MVP / Bowler of the Year
A composite award. Local associations often publish a points system that combines average ranking, high series, and honor scores. Announce the criteria at the start of the season.

Sportsmanship or Team Spirit
Subjective by design. Common methods include captain votes or a small committee. Publish the selection process early.

Creative Award Ideas

These seven awards add personality while remaining easy to track.

Gutter Ball Award – Most gutter balls or highest percentage of frames beginning with a gutter.

Turkey Award – Most consecutive strikes or most three-strike strings in a season.

Split Conversion Award – Most difficult splits converted (7-10, Big Four, etc.).

Clean Series Award – A three-game series with no open frames.

Perfect Attendance – Bowled every scheduled night.

Rookie of the Year – Best first-year or new-to-the-league bowler. Some leagues combine this with most-improved criteria for newcomers.

Secretary's or Coach's Choice – Discretionary recognition for the bowler who most improved the experience for others.

These fifteen categories give organizers a complete menu. Most house leagues select eight to ten; larger events can use more.

What To Write On A Bowling Trophy

Plaque space is limited. Use three to five short lines:

  • Award Title
  • Recipient Name
  • League or Event Name
  • Key Detail (score or short phrase)
  • Season or Date

Always verify spelling, scores, and dates against the official standings before engraving.

Champion, perfect game, MVP

A classic bowling pin trophy (column style topped with a bowling pin or action figure) is a practical choice for champions and perfect-game awards because the motif is immediately recognizable on the lanes and in photos. Resin versions of the same pin motif work well for secondary awards. Other options include acrylic shields with bowling graphics and detailed resin sculptures showing a bowler in action.

Style matching by award level

Champion / Perfect Game / MVP → 24–36"+ column or multi-tier bowling pin trophy.

High Series / High Game / Most Improved → 12–24" column or quality resin.

Creative and attendance awards → 5–8" resin figures or medals.

Team awards → larger base that can hold multiple names or an accompanying plaque.

Production time for custom engraving commonly falls in the 7–14 business day range. Ordering three to four weeks before the ceremony provides a comfortable buffer. Volume pricing often begins around 25 pieces. Confirm current pricing and lead times directly with the supplier.

FAQ

Q: What should we give for a 300 game?

A: A dedicated bowling pin trophy in the 24–36"+ range, or a crystal/plaque style award, is a practical choice. Some leagues also add a smaller secondary item (lapel pin or certificate) if the same bowler records multiple honor scores.

Q: How much do bowling trophies typically cost?

A: Small resin or medal awards often fall in the $6–$18 range. Standard 12–24" column trophies commonly run $15–$45. Larger 24–36"+ champion-style bowling pin trophies and multi-tier designs are usually $40–$90+. Final cost depends on height, material, quantity, and engraving. Request a current quote for exact figures.

Q: How should we handle ties?

A: For most-improved awards, many leagues break ties by the fractional portion of a pin. For high game or series, a pre-announced method (next-highest score or short roll-off) prevents disputes.

Q: Scratch versus handicap?

A: Offering both for high game and high series is common in leagues with a wide average range.

Do local awards need official USBC certification?

Only scores submitted for national honor recognition require full USBC procedures. League trophies follow the rules the league itself adopts, provided those rules are published in advance.Clear categories, published eligibility rules, and trophies matched to the level of each achievement help turn a routine banquet into a season highlight. Start with the eight classic categories, add creative awards that fit your group, and choose designs-especially a classic bowling pin trophy for the top honors-that feel appropriate for the accomplishment. When you are ready to order, request current pricing and a design proof for bowling pin trophies, resin figures, acrylic awards, and complete packages. The same production approach is available for Baseball Trophies And Awards and Football Team Trophies if your organization runs multiple sports programs.
